Description: This is a six-month, benefit eligible appointment,
with potential to extend based on funding.Position SummaryThe
Institute for Advanced Study seeks a focused and detail-oriented
individual to manage the digital arrangement of files and metadata
for a project that is digitizing our collection of epigraphic
squeezes from the ancient Mediterranean. This project aims to make
these resources available to the broader scholarly community
through open access. A successful applicant will have experience
working with RDF (Resource Description Framework) and TEI (Text
Encoding Initiative) XML, and will be comfortable with the computer
programming necessary to automate work with humanities files and
data. They will also be sufficiently competent in ancient Greek to
read the text of the epigraphic squeezes, and in Latin to read
major publications such as Inscriptiones Graecae. Essential Job
DutiesProject Management (40%)--- Clean collected metadata to
ensure consistency and quality--- Continue 3D-scanning work via
photogrammetry and computational development--- Develop metadata
schema in accordance with EpiDoc and RDF best practices--- Select
and annotate squeeze images for use by Smith College team---
Coordinate with NEH OCR project co-directors on project activities
and needsIT System Design and Implementation (45%)--- Develop
appropriate ecosystem for Krateros data and materials in
consultation with faculty and staff--- Oversee the ongoing
operation of the systemDomain Leadership and Development (10%)---
Build productive relationships between IAS and other entities
engaging in similar work related to Digital Humanities--- Curate
the scanning project and promote access to and use of the digital
squeeze collections which might include providing a greater
understanding of the collection to scholars of the ancient world---
Ensure IAS team is aware of and leveraging best practices to carry
out the project--- Serve as a resource to other IAS digital
humanities effortsAll other duties as assigned by your manager
(5%)Requirements: Minimum Qualifications-- Experience with RDF and
XML metadata formats-- Competency in Latin and ancient Greek--
Familiarity with Python, Javascript, or other Digital Humanities
programming languagePreferred Qualifications-- Familiarity with
classical epigraphy -- Working knowledge of Preservica,
ArchivesSpace, or a similar repository-- Experience with
photogrammetry, Agisoft Metashape, or high performance
computingWorking Conditions-- Ability to remain in a sitting
position for long periods of time-- This position can be largely
remote, although the incumbent must live in the tri-state area and
be able to travel to campus for meetings as necessaryThe Institute
