Job Description:
The Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell invites
applications and nominations for the position of Chair of the
Department of Urology. The institution is seeking a bold, visionary
leader capable of leading a dynamic academic Department of Urology
for the system leveraging North Shore University Hospital, a
766-bed level I trauma teaching hospital, one of the cornerstones
of Northwell Health, and Long Island Jewish Medical Center, a
583-bed level I trauma teaching hospital, serving the greater
metropolitan New York area with a 48-acre campus featuring three
major facilities: Long Island Jewish Hospital, Cohen Children's
Medical Center, and Zucker Hillside Hospital. Over the past decade
with the establishment of the Zucker School of Medicine, Northwell
Health has becoming a leading academic health system. With over 70
urologists and 32 residents/fellows, conducting more than 200,000
patient visits and 15,000 inpatient/outpatient surgeries, this is
an opportunity to lead and continue to grow the academic Department
of Urology with the resources and institutional dedication to be
recognized as one of the premier urology programs in the United
States.There is not a clinical procedure being performed anywhere
in the United States today that is not being conducted across this
clinical footprint creating an environment well positioned to
publish significant and innovative research capable of deeply
impacting the field while furthering educational opportunities with
the establishment of additional fellowships and expansion of
existing programs within the Department. Holding the additional
titles and duties of Chair of the Department of Urology for
Northwell Health Urology for North Shore University Hospital and
Long Island Jewish Medical Center, the Chair will have the
opportunity to lead this very large and productive Department of
Urology significantly advancing the tripartite mission within one
of the nation's largest health care systems caring for one of the

Hofstra/NorthwellEstablished in 2008, the Zucker School of Medicine
was founded by two equal partners: Hofstra University and Northwell
Health. The Zucker School of Medicine was built upon the strong
clinical and graduate medical education programs of Northwell
Health, as well as the robust research and academic programs of
both Hofstra University and Northwell's Feinstein Institutes for
Medical Research. After a formal search, Dr. Lawrence Smith,
nationally recognized for his leadership in medicine and medical
education, was appointed as Founding Dean of the School of Medicine
and after 12 years he was succeeded by Dr. David Battinelli, who
previously served as CMO of Northwell Health, Vice Dean of the
Zucker School of Medicine and chaired the original curriculum
committee to design the school. By holding leadership roles at both
the School of Medicine and Northwell Health, the Dean facilitates a
unified approach to maintaining a successful partnership, providing
innovative leadership, and ensuring the seamless integration of
classroom and clinical experiences. Dr. Smith recently transitioned
to serve as Dean Emeritus of the Donald and Barbara Zucker School
of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell and is succeeded by Dr.
Battinelli.Zucker School of Medicine emphasizes early clinical
experiences, self-directed learning, and a case-based curriculum
effectively preparing students for the changing field of medicine
through a team-based approach to training and patient care,
including a program that focuses on the ability to problem-solve,
think critically, and find information efficiently. Students across
all programs -MD, MD/PhD, PhD and other joint-degree programs -
have access to the resources offered by Hofstra University and the
Northwell Health. These include, but are not limited to,
recreational facilities, a research institute, a simulation and
standardized patient lab center, private practices and over
twenty-three hospital sites throughout New York State, including
New York city and Long Island. The Department of Urology has had
active involvement with the Zucker School of Medicine since its
inception and faculty continue to inform, teach and direct a number
of courses in the curriculum.The School's first class graduated in
May 2015. The School has enjoyed impressive growth in size and
status in just twelve years of existence, including an expanding
community of more than 400 students and 3,100 faculty. For seven
years in a row, the Zucker School of Medicine has been recognized
among the top medical schools nationwide (, U.S. News & World
Report Best Graduate Schools), and for the second year in a row as
one of the most diverse medical schools in the country (, U.S. News

tremendous success in the National Resident Matching Program.
